Community Rallies to Build Life-Saving Bridge for School Children

For the last four years, students at Nailagobokala Primary School in Naitasiri’s highlands have faced a dangerous trek to school. Following the destruction of an old culvert on their access road, the children resorted to using bamboo rafts to cross a river, which at times could be as shallow as ankle-deep or as deep as knee-deep.

Concerned about the daily risks their children encountered, the villagers of Nadovu decided to take action. Despite multiple requests for help from the government, Ratu Solomoni Naiqua, the school manager, indicated that there had been no response from the authorities.

“For the past five years, we’ve seen the daily dangers faced by our children as they cross the river to reach school,” Mr. Naiqua remarked.

In light of the lack of official assistance, the community and the school committee initiated a fundraising effort to construct a new bridge. Fueled by parents’ determination to provide safe and reliable access for their children, the initiative showcased a remarkable instance of community unity.

Over the course of three months, the villagers and the Parents-Teachers Association worked diligently, managing to raise $9,000. Their combined efforts culminated in the building of a new bridge, ensuring a safer commute for the students.

“I truly appreciate the dedication of the parents,” Mr. Naiqua expressed, conveying his gratitude. “It demonstrates the remarkable impact a community can make with limited resources.”

The newly constructed bridge was officially inaugurated last Friday.
