Community Leaders Sound Alarm Over Social Decline in Nasinu

Landowners in major settlements of Nasinu are voicing their concerns about escalating social challenges in their communities. They have reported a diminishing respect for traditional landowners and a growing disregard for previously established agreements.

Kolinio Tabuadrevula, the traditional chief of the Nawavatu Clan, which represents the Rokara, Kalabu, expressed that their ancestors selflessly offered land to various groups to foster improved living conditions. However, he is troubled by the declining mutual respect that has developed over time.

Tabuadrevula highlighted a worrying rise in social problems and illegal activities that threaten the younger generation’s future. He stated, “Individuals come here with hopes for better opportunities and education for their children, but after settling, they begin to stray from honoring the Vanua, its leadership, and decisions made within the community.”

He pointed out alarming behaviors, including suspicions about individuals visiting certain homes at odd hours and revealed that he had confiscated drugs from buyers in the area. In response to these issues, stricter regulations have been enforced within the community. Tabuadrevula is calling on residents to renounce illegal activities, particularly drug-related crimes, to protect the prospects of future generations.

This situation reflects broader concerns echoing throughout regions such as Naitasiri, where provincial councils are also examining the rise in crime and illegal activity in informal settlements. There, leaders have suggested implementing awareness programs to empower communities and address these pressing challenges collectively.

The narratives from Nasinu and similar regions illustrate a pressing need for community cohesion and the reaffirmation of traditional values to combat rising social issues. As communities rally together, there is hope that through increased communication and strict adherence to regulations, they can foster a safer and more respectful environment for future generations.
