Community Empowerment Takes Center Stage at Nasinu Festival

Festivals play a crucial role in uniting people from various cultures and backgrounds, fostering relationships and friendships that empower communities to accomplish their goals. This sentiment was emphasized by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance Hon. Professor Biman Prasad during the Nasinu Festival – Girmit Night (Bollywood Night).

He remarked that successful collaborations not only boost the community but also strengthen its bonds and highlight the advantages of working together. Professor Prasad expressed his appreciation to the Nasinu Festival Charitable Trust Fund and the organizing team for reviving the festival after a five-year break.

“I hope that the festival continues to grow and retains its significance as an essential event for the people of Nasinu,” he stated.

He noted that Girmit Night is among the most popular cultural events at festivals across the nation, bringing together diverse ethnic backgrounds for an enjoyable evening filled with music and entertainment.

“The Nasinu Festival aims to honor the rich cultural heritage of Nasinu and our communities while reinforcing community ties by gathering people,” he continued.

Looking ahead, Professor Prasad announced that the Coalition Government will present a new National Development Plan next month. He indicated that a primary focus of this strategy is individual empowerment to stimulate growth.

“The vision behind the new National Development Plan is to empower the people of Fiji through unity, serving as a roadmap for our communities,” he explained.

According to Professor Prasad, Nasinu and its surrounding areas are evolving into significant urban centers. “As more individuals move from rural to urban areas, effective urban development will be vital in enhancing the social well-being of our populace, with 58% currently residing in urban regions.”

He stressed the need for an inclusive approach to urban development that prioritizes livability, environmental sustainability, and the stimulation of economic activities.

The Coalition Government recognizes the essential role that community-based, religious, and civil society organizations play in strengthening local communities and promoting development. The government is committed to collaborating with these entities to empower individuals and communities, reinforcing the foundation of democracy.
