In a touching example of community spirit, residents of Voivoi in Legalega, Nadi, recently came together to tackle the pressing issue of deteriorating road conditions by personally repairing potholes. Rather than awaiting government assistance, families united last Saturday with shovels and gravel, determined to enhance the safety and accessibility of their local road.
The Voivoi road, originally built as an access route for sugarcane, has seen considerable residential development, particularly due to an influx of workers from Nadi International Airport. The increased foot and vehicle traffic has resulted in concerns over unsafe driving conditions caused by the many potholes present on the road.
Leading this community initiative was Pastor Apenisa Ralulu from the Kingdom International Discipleship Ministry, who emphasized the residents’ commitment to creating tangible change. The initiative was inspired by neighbor Sidney Sanday’s suggestion for a community road repair, which resonated with many locals and drew enthusiastic participation, reflecting a remarkable sense of unity.
“This effort in the hot sun signifies our proactive approach rather than waiting for the government, which often takes time to respond,” Pastor Ralulu stated. While they have been outreach efforts to local government offices, the urgency of the situation compelled the community to act on their own.
Social media played a crucial role in raising awareness about the road’s deteriorating state, with residents like Seremaia Bolaitamana highlighting the damage to vehicles caused by potholes. Bolaitamana reiterated the significance of the community’s action in alleviating these concerns.
Additionally, Lawrence Kumar, vice president of the Nadi Chamber of Commerce and Industry, praised the residents’ efforts as exemplary, noting that instead of merely complaining about inadequate government intervention, this community took it upon themselves to initiate repairs. “Their proactive approach is commendable and could serve as an inspirational model for other communities,” Kumar shared.
This grassroots initiative not only resulted in improvements to the local infrastructure but also strengthened community bonds, showcasing self-reliance amid challenges. The collaborative spirit exhibited in Voivoi reflects a hopeful vision for future community engagement across the region. This dedication to positive change through collective efforts serves as a beacon of inspiration for others to embark on similar initiatives, reinforcing the notion that community action can yield beneficial results.
