Amitesh Deo, the chief executive of the Pacific Recycling Foundation (PRF), emphasized that waste management is a shared responsibility among all citizens. This statement follows a cleanup campaign held on Friday along Koronivia Road in Nausori, during which a total of 596 kilograms of general waste and recyclables were collected.
The cleanup was organized by PRF in collaboration with Waste Recyclers Fiji Limited (WRFL), Malhana Cloud Kitchen, the Koronivia Business Council (KBC), and local residents. It commenced at the Koronivia Roundabout and stretched to the Shiv Krish Temple on Kabutri Drive. The area has faced persistent issues with irresponsible waste disposal along the roadside and into drainage systems, posing risks to environmental and community health.
Deo remarked, “The volume of waste we gathered in just two hours underscores the urgent need for everyone to abandon the throwaway culture and take charge of their waste. We all have to pledge to maintain Koronivia as a clean and green space for future generations.” The cleanup revealed considerable amounts of household waste and recyclables, including baby diapers, PET bottles, construction debris, beer bottles and cans, takeaway food containers, clothing, razors, and boxes filled with unused items.
These items contributed to drain blockages following recent grass-cutting efforts by the Fiji Roads Authority along the roadside. Deo noted that it was regrettable that some waste had to be left behind because the cleanup teams could not safely access the soggy drains due to hazardous objects that could cause injury.
The campaign resulted in the collection of 500 kilograms of general waste, 60 kilograms of PET bottles, and 36 kilograms of aluminum cans. Deo explained that this significant amount signifies an increase in waste disposal in the area compared to past cleanup initiatives, highlighting a concerning lack of accountability among both travelers and residents.
“This effort is not merely about cleaning waste; it aims to shift mindsets. We urge every individual to consider their habits and make intentional choices that benefit our environment,” he added. Deo also expressed appreciation to the Fiji Police Force for their support in ensuring safety and smooth traffic flow during the cleanup campaign.
