Joseph Fatiaki, a dedicated community servant with over 35 years of experience as a police officer, has been the chairman of the Tavua District Council of Social Services since 2020. At 63 years old, Fatiaki has leveraged his extensive career in law enforcement, particularly in community policing, to engage with local residents and enhance community initiatives.
Reflecting on his journey, Mr. Fatiaki remarked, “Three years ago I was elected chairman, and it felt like a natural progression from my policing days.” He emphasized that the transition from a police officer, where authority is inherent, to a voluntary leadership role in the community requires a shift in approach. “In this position, you don’t have power over people; you rely on encouragement and inspiration to get them involved,” he added.
As a father of five and grandfather of eight, he underscores the importance of fostering community participation. He believes that attracting members to the organization is critical, particularly in maintaining their motivation, as many volunteers may become disheartened without proper support from leadership.
Mr. Fatiaki advises aspiring young leaders that patience and commitment are essential in the realm of voluntary service. He recognizes the challenges of leadership, especially when working with unpaid volunteers, and highlights the need for honesty and transparency in communication. “You must ensure you provide accurate information to your team,” he advised.
Gratefully acknowledging the opportunity to continue serving his community, Mr. Fatiaki expresses a desire to eventually pass the torch to younger generations. “I still have the energy to contribute, but I know that it will be time to step back and allow the youth to take on leadership roles,” he stated.
This narrative serves not only as an inspiration for community service but also as a reminder of the value of experience and dedication in fostering strong, supportive environments. Fatiaki’s journey highlights that successful community engagement relies on motivation, patience, and a commitment to serve, encouraging the next generation to carry forward the spirit of volunteerism.
