Opposition MP Rinesh Sharma has emphasized the need for more effective and proactive measures, along with community support, to prevent suicide. In remarks made to Parliament last week, he highlighted that the most common methods of suicide worldwide include pesticide ingestion, hangings, and firearms, leading to the banning of paraquat in Fiji.
Sharma noted that the issue of suicide carries stigma, shame, and misunderstanding, which often prevents individuals from seeking help. He stated that tackling suicide is a collective responsibility and cannot be addressed by just one individual, organization, or institution.
He called for stricter regulations on the sale and use of fertilizers and pesticides that can be utilized in suicide attempts. Additionally, he stressed the necessity to combat the networks promoting drug use, social media bullying, and threats, suggesting that laws should be enacted to penalize individuals who engage in online harassment.
Citing a recent incident where a TikTok user took his own life due to online bullying, Sharma expressed concern over the kind of content accessible to children, including threats and challenges to fight. He advocated for enhancing protective factors around vulnerable individuals by offering social support, ensuring follow-up care, tackling stigma, and aiding those affected by suicide.
Sharma urged the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance to consider these issues in the forthcoming budget.
