Communities Struggle to Kickstart Evacuation Centre Projects Despite Government Support

Spread the love

Multiple communities seeking government support for the construction of evacuation centers and community halls have yet to initiate their projects. This concern was highlighted by Assistant Minister for Rural and Maritime Development Jovesa Vocea during a discussion with villagers in Namuka, Macuata.

Mr. Vocea indicated that priority would be assigned to those communities that have either raised funds or laid the groundwork for their buildings. “No community has actually started the work,” he stated, while also noting that government resources will not be allocated for church constructions, despite several requests received for such projects.

The oversight of this assistance has now transitioned to his ministry, moving away from the Ministry of iTaukei Affairs. Mr. Vocea advised that communities interested in having an evacuation center or community hall built should send a letter to their local commissioner or district officer. Subsequently, selected community projects will be funded.
