The Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of Employment, Maritino Nemani, has highlighted that Australia and New Zealand are increasingly recognizing the importance of addressing the challenges faced by workers involved in the Pacific Australia Labour Mobility (PALM) scheme.
Mr. Nemani emphasized the necessity for all stakeholders to collaborate in order to enhance the conditions and support for these workers. He noted, “We are not addressing the issues related to PALM scheme workers in isolation,” underlining that Fiji is working alongside various organizations, including UNICEF and other key agencies, as well as engaging with other countries participating in the scheme, such as Vanuatu and Solomon Islands, to collectively tackle shared challenges.
He also pointed out the significance of establishing a sustainable system that benefits both the workers and their families left behind. Nemani stated, “The key stakeholders, including the receiving countries, play a crucial role in this process. We need their assistance as they employ our workers.” He reiterated that Australia and New Zealand are vital in helping provide solutions to these issues.
