Collaboration Over Politics: A Call for Constitutional Unity in Fiji

The Great Council of Chiefs (GCC) chairman Ratu Viliame Seruvakula has called on Members of Parliament to collaborate rather than engage in political maneuvering as discussions commence on a potential constitutional review. Ratu Viliame emphasized the crucial role parliamentarians play in ensuring the review process is inclusive, cooperative, fair, and just.

He expressed optimism about the direction the country is heading while stressing the importance of unity among all Fijians. “Now is the time to set aside political and personal differences and work together for the common good,” he stated. He urged lawmakers to focus on creating a constitution that would benefit future generations, one that is fair, just, and inclusive.

Ratu Viliame highlighted the importance of respecting the rights of the iTaukei people regarding their natural resources while also ensuring that the rights of other ethnic groups are protected within the Constitution. He called for a document that fosters a harmonious living environment, warning that a constitution causing discontent within certain community segments could lead to broader societal issues.

He urged MPs to act promptly, stating that the time for decisive action is now, rather than waiting another five to ten years. Ratu Viliame recognized that while he does not completely oppose the existing 2013 Constitution, any revisions must involve public consultation to ensure that it is a reflection of the people’s will. He mentioned that he has heard positive feedback from some MPs regarding the review process and reiterated the need for extensive consultation moving forward.
