Collaboration Key to Improving PALM Scheme Worker Conditions

The Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of Employment, Maritino Nemani, highlighted the growing recognition by Australia and New Zealand of the challenges faced by workers participating in the Pacific Australia Labour Mobility (PALM) scheme. He emphasized the necessity for collaboration among various stakeholders to enhance the conditions and support for these workers.

Mr. Nemani noted that Fiji is not addressing the issues related to PALM scheme workers in isolation. He pointed out that a study is being conducted in partnership with UNICEF and other key agencies, as well as discussions with labor-signing countries like Vanuatu and the Solomon Islands, to find better solutions to shared challenges.

He stressed the need for a sustainable system that benefits both the workers and the families they leave behind. Mr. Nemani underscored the crucial role that receiving countries play in this process, stating that their cooperation is essential as they host these workers.

Australia and New Zealand, in particular, are viewed as vital partners in developing solutions to these pressing issues.
