The Commission of Inquiry (COI) investigating the appointment of Barbara Malimali as Commissioner of the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) is planning to ask President Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu for an extension on their investigation period, which may now extend into next month. Justice David E Ashton-Lewis, the chair of the commission, indicated that the request for more time is necessary due to delays in the examination of witnesses, which have hindered their progress.

On the third day of hearings, Justice Ashton-Lewis described the day’s proceedings as productive but acknowledged the need for additional time, proposing a timeline extension to the end of February. He emphasized the importance of a thorough inquiry, stating that comprehensive questioning is essential for a complete understanding of the issues at hand.

Justice Ashton-Lewis noted that the complexity of the questions posed requires detailed explanations, rather than simple affirmative or negative responses, contributing to the slower pace of the hearings. To facilitate progress, he mentioned intentions to conduct sessions on weekends.

So far, all witnesses have been cooperative, and there have been no attendance issues reported. According to the commission, there are still about 28 witnesses remaining to provide their testimonies.

This inquiry underscores the commitment to transparency and accountability in governance, highlighting the importance of examining public appointments thoroughly. The engagement of various groups in the questioning process further demonstrates the collaborative effort to ensure justice and integrity in public service. As the commission continues its work, the extension may allow for a more comprehensive investigation, ultimately benefiting the integrity of the FICAC and the trust of the public.

In summary, the COI is working diligently to ensure a fair and thorough investigation, and the requested extension reflects the seriousness with which this matter is being approached.
