Assistant Minister for Agriculture and Waterways, Tomasi Tunabuna, paid a visit to the Mua Research Station in Taveuni, where he was updated on the progress of ongoing Coconut Development Programs. His tour of the facility was led by Semisi Tuikilakila, Officer in Charge, who outlined the advancements being made in coconut breeding.
The research station is currently focused on breeding 13 varieties of coconuts and is testing new strains aimed at enhancing economic returns while meeting regional demands. Tuikilakila highlighted the integral value of coconut cultivation, stressing that every part of the coconut plant is utilized, which minimizes waste and maximizes benefits for local communities.
During his visit, Minister Tunabuna commended the dedicated efforts of the station staff in cultivating resilient coconut varieties. He acknowledged, however, the absence of sheep grazing at the station, a crucial practice for managing undergrowth and enhancing the station’s ecological sustainability in diverse climatic conditions. Tunabuna advocated for the reintegration of this practice, emphasizing its importance for the long-term resilience of the station.
