Peni Namulo and Sailasa Kaitani, roadside vendors in Nadi, are reaping the rewards of selling green coconuts, not only as a profitable venture but also as a means of promoting health among their customers. With 14 years of experience in this business, Mr. Namulo highlighted the importance of green coconut juice for many in the community.

He noted that a significant portion of their clientele consists of individuals battling non-communicable diseases (NCDs) or those caring for recently discharged hospital patients, many of whom consider coconut juice as a health remedy. Mr. Namulo observed a preference among customers for coconuts with minimal meat, primarily for the juice, with many arriving with empty containers to fill.

“It is fulfilling to hear from customers who return to express their gratitude after experiencing health improvements,” Mr. Namulo expressed. Initially, he noted the fluctuation in daily customer counts, but currently, they cater to a diverse clientele that includes tourists, Indo-Fijians, and an increasing number of iTaukei locals.

The cost of green coconuts ranges from $4 to $5 each, and Mr. Namulo mentioned that local sellers often enjoy lucrative business from nearby hotels and resorts, sometimes fulfilling large orders of up to 1,000 coconuts in a single day. Their earnings can exceed $100 daily, particularly during peak demand periods.

This story reflects not only a successful business model but also a commitment to community health and well-being, showcasing how local enterprises can make a positive impact while thriving economically.

In summary, Namulo and Kaitani’s coconut venture illustrates the intersection of commerce and health, highlighting the social responsibility of local businesses. Their work embodies a hopeful connection between sustenance and wellness in the community.
