A prominent developer from Nadi has expressed deep disillusionment with the Coalition Government. Abbas Ali, who owns Fantasy Island, did not hold back in his criticism, particularly targeting the façade of purportedly independent institutions and their operational shortcomings.
Ali referred to the ongoing controversy surrounding the appointment of the new Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) Commissioner, Barbara Malimali, as ridiculous. He pointed out that Malimali was under investigation by FICAC, and the day before her appointment was made public, FICAC investigators had conducted a search at the Electoral Commission office, where she was chairperson.
The details surrounding her role at the Electoral Commission remain uncertain, as the Constitutional Offices Commission secretariat has yet to confirm her resignation.
Having a background in civil service and extensive experience in education, Ali has developed projects worth over $90 million on Fantasy Island over the last 30 years. He urged the Government to rectify its approach; otherwise, he believes its stability may be at risk.
Ali stated, “No way, there is no hope at all,” emphasizing that no progress has been made since the election. He accused the leaders of prioritizing their own interests over the people’s needs, asserting that the ongoing situation could jeopardize the country’s future.
He questioned why ministers have not begun addressing national issues, despite having their own problems. Ali called on the Government to realign its priorities according to its manifesto.
He warned that if public confidence continues to wane, the Government could find itself in a precarious position. He reminded the Prime Minister and his Cabinet to remain alert, suggesting they risk facing the same fate as the FijiFirst government, which was ousted largely due to public discontent.
Ali remarked, “The voters expected something better from this Government,” reflecting his skepticism about the long-term viability of the three-party Coalition Government, now in its second year.
In response to Ali’s comments, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance Biman Prasad remarked that individuals have the right to express their views and criticisms regarding the Government, emphasizing its commitment to openness and freedom of expression.
