The Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji (MSAF) has announced the temporary closure of Ellington wharf in Rakiraki due to significant damage. MSAF’s CEO, Joeli Cawaki, informed stakeholders—including ship owners, masters, shipping companies, marine service providers, and agents—that the wharf will be closed from 5:00 PM on January 6 until further notice.

During a visit to the site, it was observed that the Goundar Shipping vessel, Joseph P, was in the process of loading passengers, cargo, and vehicles before departing at 5:45 PM. Large cracks and considerable damage were visible on the jetty, indicating the urgency of the situation.

The closure underscores the importance of safety and diligence in maritime operations, especially in light of the structural integrity issues discovered at the wharf. The immediate response to the potential hazards demonstrates a commitment to ensuring the safety of all maritime activities.

This situation may present an opportunity for the local community and relevant authorities to collaborate on infrastructure improvements and enhancements that could ultimately lead to a more resilient and robust maritime infrastructure in the future.
