Closing the Gender Gap: Why Equality is Key to Business Success

Promoting gender equality in the workplace is not only a moral obligation, but it also brings significant advantages to employers. Pravesh Sharma, Chair of the Human Rights and Anti-Discrimination Commission (HRADC), emphasized that the right to fair employment practices, including humane treatment and proper working conditions, is enshrined in Section 20 of the Constitution of the Republic of Fiji. The Employment Relations Act of 2007 further reinforces these rights.

Despite existing legal protections, Sharma pointed out that women still face substantial challenges in the workplace, including significant pay disparities compared to their male counterparts. Women are underrepresented in senior management, leadership roles, and formal decision-making processes. Alarmingly, statistics reveal that 23% of women have encountered sexual harassment at work, yet only 8% have reported these incidents. Moreover, 43% of mothers experience maternity discrimination, highlighting an urgent need for change.

A 2016 study by the Fiji Women’s Rights Movement found that one in five women in Fiji had been sexually harassed while at work. Discrimination, often subtle and unintentional, not only undermines respect but also perpetuates inequality in the workplace.

Sharma reiterated that gender equality is beneficial for all. Research indicates that companies that prioritize gender equality experience improved outcomes for both male and female employees. To address gender inequality, he suggested conducting pay audits to identify and rectify disparities in compensation, enhancing transparency regarding the gender pay gap within organizations.

Additionally, making flexible working arrangements a priority is crucial, especially as the gender pay gap narrows for younger workers but widens among working mothers and those employed in the care economy.

As demographics continue to evolve, the importance of striving for gender equality in the workplace remains paramount. Sharma concluded by stating that achieving gender equality is not only an ethical necessity but should also be a strategic business focus.
