Closing the Gender Gap: Why Equality is Good for Business

Promoting gender equality in the workplace is crucial not just for moral reasons but also for the tangible benefits it brings to businesses, according to Pravesh Sharma, chair of the Human Rights and Anti-Discrimination Commission (HRADC) in Fiji. He emphasized that the right to fair employment practices is enshrined in Section 20 of Fiji’s Constitution, which mandates humane treatment and conducive working conditions for all individuals.

Despite these provisions, Sharma pointed out that women in the workplace continue to face systemic challenges, including significant pay gaps compared to their male counterparts and underrepresentation in senior management and decision-making roles. He highlighted concerning statistics, noting that 23% of women have reported experiencing sexual harassment at work, yet only 8% have taken the step to report such incidents. Additionally, 43% of mothers in the workforce have faced maternity discrimination.

A study from the Fiji Women’s Rights Movement in 2016 revealed that one in five women in Fiji reported sexual harassment at work. Sharma clarified that discrimination can manifest in both overt and subtle forms, reflecting underlying inequalities that can damage workplace culture and morale.

He maintains that achieving gender equality stands to benefit all employees, as research indicates that companies with more equitable practices create better outcomes for both men and women. To tackle these persistent issues, Sharma recommends conducting pay audits to uncover wage disparities and promote transparency. He also advocates for prioritizing flexible working arrangements, particularly as the pay gap for young workers narrows while widening for working mothers and those in the caregiving sector.

In a rapidly changing demographic landscape, Sharma asserts that the pursuit of gender equality in the workplace should be seen not only as a social imperative but also as a vital business strategy.
