Climbing Through Time: The Legendary 199 Steps of Levuka

In the center of Levuka, the iconic 199 steps of Mission Hill stand as one of the historical landmarks in Fiji’s former capital. These coral and limestone steps, weathered by time, tell a rich story that intertwines with the area’s history.

During the mid-19th century, Levuka was buzzing with opportunities, drawing missionaries, European traders, and settlers who left their impact on this coastal town. It was in this lively period that four Roman Catholic Marist Fathers arrived in Levuka, driven by their mission to share their faith and provide education to the local communities of Ovalau Island.

Recognizing the necessity for a place of worship and learning, the missionaries selected Mission Hill as the site for their activities. It is believed the steps were constructed shortly after the mission was established in 1858.

Luke Tikomaisiga, a 71-year-old resident of Levuka, reminisces about the tales surrounding the famous steps, stories that he inherited from his parents. “The missionaries were resolute; they desired a path that echoed their spiritual journey. Thus, they built the staircase of 199 steps,” he recalls.

These steps were crafted using local materials and constructed by hand, showcasing the skill and dedication of both the missionaries and the locals of that era. “My grandfather told me these steps represented not just a passageway but also the arduous journey the missionaries undertook to bring the Gospel to the people,” Tikomaisiga adds. “They were designed to grant access to the site where the first Roman Catholic mission in Fiji was founded.”

Over the years, the 199 steps have become a symbol of Levuka’s distinguished history. Although the town’s fortunes changed when the capital moved to Suva in 1882, the steps remain a steadfast reminder of the early days of Christianity. Locals and tourists routinely ascend the steps, not only for the breathtaking views of Levuka but also to connect with the past.

Market vendor Aloesi Raiviti highlights the steps’ cultural importance, stating, “They serve as a reminder of the town’s colonial history and its role in spreading the Gospel not only in Fiji but throughout the Pacific.”

The 199 steps have witnessed numerous significant events throughout Levuka’s history. They have served as a gathering point for generations to honor the town’s roots. With ongoing efforts to preserve the steps as part of Levuka’s historical significance, they maintain their status as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Adjacent to the steps lie the remnants of the old Catholic mission and a small historic chapel.

Today, the 199 steps of Mission Hill remain a treasured landmark, inviting visitors to explore and reflect. They offer more than just a climb; each step reverberates with the legacy of those who came before, bridging Levuka’s colonial past with its current charm.
