The Ministry of Agriculture has announced that climate-smart agriculture will be the centerpiece of the 2024 National Agriculture Show, scheduled from October 15 to 18. Under the theme “Empowering Farmers: Cultivating Resilience through Innovation and Inclusiveness in Climate-Smart Agriculture,” Minister Vatimi Rayalu highlighted the visible impacts of climate change on Fiji’s agriculture. He pointed out that saltwater intrusion is affecting not just coastal areas but also rivers, making the sea’s presence perceptible inland.
The four-day event aims to unite farmers, agricultural experts, industry leaders, and the public to address these pressing challenges. Participants can engage in practical sessions, demonstrations, and expert-led discussions to explore the latest advancements in climate-smart agricultural practices.
Rayalu emphasized the significance of adopting climate-smart methods, particularly focusing on traditional crops that have demonstrated resilience over centuries. He remarked, “Rather than creating numerous hybrids, we prefer to propagate our traditional varieties, which have proven their durability.”
The National Agriculture Show will broaden its scope beyond crops to introduce new livestock breeds and highlight animal health and production techniques. Attendees can look forward to demonstrations of biogas production and other innovative practices in livestock management. Additionally, farmers will have the chance to express their concerns directly to ministry officials.
The event will feature a “Farmers’ Village,” allowing local farmers to display their produce and value-added goods. Visitors can participate in interactive exhibits, farm-to-table experiences, and educational activities suitable for all ages.
Rayalu invited farmers, students, and the general public to attend the Agriculture Show 2024, emphasizing the celebration of innovations that are shaping the future of agriculture and the importance of working toward a more sustainable and productive industry.
