The Ministry of Agriculture has announced that climate-smart agriculture will be the focal point of the 2024 National Agriculture Show, scheduled for October 15 to 18.

With the theme “Empowering Farmers: Cultivating Resilience through Innovation and Inclusiveness in Climate-Smart Agriculture,” Minister Vatimi Rayalu emphasized the visible impacts of climate change on agriculture in Fiji, noting issues such as saltwater intrusion that is affecting both coastal areas and rivers.

The four-day event is anticipated to gather farmers, agricultural experts, industry leaders, and the community to address these significant challenges. Attendees will have the chance to engage in hands-on sessions, live demonstrations, and expert panels to learn about the latest developments in climate-smart agriculture practices.

Rayalu indicated that there will be side events where the public can participate in practical sessions and discussions with experts, covering topics such as soil health and innovative farming techniques. He highlighted the critical need for the adoption of climate-smart methods by focusing on traditional crops that have demonstrated resilience over the years.

“Rather than creating too many hybrids, we prefer to propagate traditional varieties because these have proven their endurance over time,” Rayalu stated.

The National Agriculture Show will also highlight new livestock breeds and present advancements in animal health and production techniques. Attendees can look forward to demonstrations on biogas production and other modern livestock practices. The event will give farmers a platform to voice their concerns directly to ministry officials.

Additionally, a “Farmers’ Village” will be featured, where local farmers can display their produce and value-added products. The show will include interactive exhibits, farm-to-table experiences, and educational activities suitable for all ages.

Rayalu encouraged farmers, school children, and the wider public to participate in the Agriculture Show 2024 as a celebration of innovations that are shaping the future of agriculture and contributing to a more sustainable and productive industry.
