The Ministry of Agriculture has announced that climate-smart agriculture will be a focal point at the upcoming 2024 National Agriculture Show, scheduled for October 15 to 18.

Under the theme “Empowering Farmers: Cultivating Resilience through Innovation and Inclusiveness in Climate-Smart Agriculture,” Minister Vatimi Rayalu highlighted the visible impacts of climate change on agriculture in Fiji. He pointed out that saltwater intrusion is increasingly affecting not only coastal areas but also rivers, indicating a concerning environmental shift.

The four-day event aims to gather farmers, agricultural experts, industry leaders, and the general public to address these pressing challenges. Participants will have the chance to engage in hands-on sessions, demonstrations, and expert-led discussions to learn about the latest developments in climate-smart practices.

Rayalu mentioned the inclusion of side events that will allow the public to join in on discussions about topics such as soil health and innovative farming techniques, facilitated by experts in the field. He emphasized the significance of adopting climate-smart practices that focus on traditional crops known for their resilience over time. “Rather than developing numerous hybrids, we prefer to propagate our enduring traditional varieties,” he noted.

In addition to crops, the National Agriculture Show will also highlight new livestock breeds and innovative animal health and production methods. Attendees can look forward to demonstrations on biogas production and other advanced livestock practices, along with opportunities for farmers to voice their concerns directly to ministry officials.

The event will feature a “Farmers’ Village,” where local farmers will display their products and value-added goods. Interactive exhibits, farm-to-table experiences, and educational activities for all ages will also be part of the program.

Rayalu encouraged farmers, students, and the general public to participate in the Agriculture Show 2024, celebrating the innovations that are shaping the future of agriculture and striving for a more sustainable and productive industry.
