The Ministry of Agriculture has announced that climate-smart agriculture will be the focal point of the 2024 National Agriculture Show, scheduled to take place from October 15 to 18.
Under the theme “Empowering Farmers: Cultivating Resilience through Innovation and Inclusiveness in Climate-Smart Agriculture,” Minister Vatimi Rayalu emphasized the noticeable impact of climate change on agriculture in Fiji, pointing out issues like saltwater intrusion that not only affect coastal areas but are also moving upstream, with the smell of the sea detectable further inland.
The four-day event aims to unite farmers, agricultural professionals, industry leaders, and the public to engage in discussions about these pressing challenges. Attendees will have the opportunity to participate in practical sessions, demonstrations, and expert talks that will cover the latest advancements in climate-smart techniques.
Rayalu mentioned that there would be additional side events where the public can engage in hands-on activities and discussions led by experts focusing on various topics, including soil health and innovative farming methods. He highlighted the significance of adopting climate-smart practices and emphasized the cultivation of traditional crops that have demonstrated resilience over many years.
“We prefer to propagate our traditional varieties instead of focusing on an excess of hybrids, as these time-tested varieties are more reliable,” Rayalu stated.
The National Agriculture Show will not only spotlight crops but will also introduce new livestock breeds and present techniques related to animal health and production. Visitors can look forward to demonstrations of biogas production and other innovative livestock practices, as well as opportunities for farmers to voice their concerns directly to ministry officials.
Additionally, the event will feature a “Farmers’ Village,” where local producers can display their crops and value-added products. There will be interactive exhibits, farm-to-table experiences, and educational activities suitable for all ages.
Rayalu encouraged farmers, students, and the general public to attend the Agriculture Show 2024, emphasizing it as an opportunity to celebrate innovations that are shaping the future of agriculture and fostering a more sustainable and productive industry.
