Climate-Smart Agriculture Takes Center Stage at 2024 National Agriculture Show

The Ministry of Agriculture has announced that climate-smart agriculture will be the focal point of the upcoming 2024 National Agriculture Show, scheduled for October 15 to 18.

Under the theme “Empowering Farmers: Cultivating Resilience through Innovation and Inclusiveness in Climate-Smart Agriculture,” Minister Vatimi Rayalu highlighted the visible impacts of climate change on agriculture in Fiji. He remarked on the issue of saltwater intrusion, stating, “Saltwater intrusion has not only affected the coast; it is going right up the river, you can smell the sea.”

This four-day event is expected to attract farmers, agricultural experts, industry leaders, and the general public to engage in discussions regarding the challenges faced in the sector. Participants will have the chance to explore the latest advancements in climate-smart practices through hands-on sessions, demonstrations, and expert-led discussions.

Rayalu emphasized the inclusion of side events where members of the public can engage in interactive sessions on various topics, including soil health and smart farming techniques. He also underscored the significance of adopting climate-smart methods, particularly by focusing on traditional crops that have demonstrated resilience over centuries. “Instead of coming up with too many hybrids, we would rather just propagate the traditional varieties that we have, because these are varieties that have stood the test of time,” he stated.

In addition to crops, the National Agriculture Show will present new livestock breeds and highlight animal health and production techniques. Attendees can look forward to demonstrations on biogas production and other innovative livestock practices. The event will also provide a platform for farmers to voice their concerns to ministry officials directly.

A “Farmers’ Village” will be featured at the show, where local farmers will present their produce and value-added products. Attendees can engage with interactive exhibits, farm-to-table experiences, and educational activities suitable for all ages.

Rayalu called on farmers, school children, and the wider community to participate in the Agriculture Show 2024, stating, “Let us celebrate the innovations shaping the future of agriculture and work towards a more sustainable and productive industry.”
