Climate Crisis: A Growing Threat to Global Security and Prosperity

Dr. Sivendra Michael, the permanent secretary for Environment and Climate Change, highlighted the escalating climate crisis and biodiversity loss during the closing remarks of the Indo-Pacific Environmental Security Forum (IPESF 24) in Natadola last week. He described these challenges as profound threats to global security, peace, and prosperity.

Dr. Michael warned against viewing climate change as a separate issue from security and conflict, stating that such compartmentalized thinking is misguided. He noted that conflicts have historically arisen over vital resources, including land, minerals, and water, as well as access to essential human needs.

Under the leadership of Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka, the Fijian Government is prioritizing collaboration across ministries and disciplines. Dr. Michael emphasized that environmental concerns are inseparable from public health and broader developmental issues, and that Fiji cannot address these challenges alone.

He called for genuine partnerships among forum participants, asserting that collaboration is crucial for overcoming global crises. The discussions throughout the week focused on critical topics such as tourism, cultural practices, food and water security, livelihoods, and disaster risk reduction.

Dr. Michael underscored the importance of Fiji’s environment to the country’s history, survival, progress, and future—an essential reality shared by all small island nations across the Pacific. He acknowledged the vast expanse and diversity of the Pacific and the interconnectedness of nations within the region.
