Clearing the Blockage: Water Authority in Action in Sigatoka

The Water Authority of Fiji (WAF) has successfully removed rags that were blocking a pump in Sigatoka Town.

This was confirmed yesterday by WAF corporate communications officer Peni Shute.

The issue was initially highlighted by Sigatoka businessman Rajeshwar Sharma, who reported sewage overflowing into drains and eventually flowing into the river. Sharma described this problem as ongoing and raised his concerns through the media.

“This has been an ongoing issue in Sigatoka, with the Sigatoka Town Council diverting the main sewage line into drains that flow into the Sigatoka River,” Sharma claimed.

He mentioned that the usual response to their complaints was that the issue was still under maintenance.

Shute explained that the overflow was due to a pump blockage at Mission Road WWPS. The WAF team managed to remove the pump and clear the blockage on Monday morning.

“The blockage was caused by rags,” he added.

Attempts to contact the town council’s special administrator, Adish Naidu, for comments were unsuccessful as he is believed to be out of the country.
