Cleanup Campaign Reveals Urgent Need for Waste Accountability in Koronivia

Amitesh Deo, the chief executive of the Pacific Recycling Foundation, emphasized that waste management is a shared responsibility among all citizens. His remarks followed a cleanup campaign along Koronivia Road in Nausori, where a total of 596 kilograms of general waste and recyclables were collected on Friday.

This initiative was organized by the Pacific Recycling Foundation in collaboration with Waste Recyclers Fiji Limited, Malhana Cloud Kitchen, the Koronivia Business Council, and local residents. The cleanup began at the Koronivia Roundabout and extended to the Shiv Krish Temple on Kabutri Drive. This area has been a hotspot for significant irresponsible waste dumping, endangering the environment and community health.

“The volume of waste we gathered in just two hours underscores the urgent need for everyone to shift away from a throwaway culture and take responsibility for their waste. It is essential that we all commit to maintaining a clean and green Koronivia for future generations,” Deo stated.

During the cleanup, a substantial amount of household waste and recyclables was found, including baby diapers, PET bottles, construction waste, beer bottles and cans, takeaway food containers, clothing, razors, and boxes filled with unused items. These materials contributed to blockage in drains, following recent grass cutting conducted by the Fiji Roads Authority alongside the road.

Deo expressed regret that his team had to leave behind some waste due to the inaccessibility of soggy drains, which posed potential hazards from sharp objects that could cause injuries during the cleanup.

The collected items included 500 kilograms of general waste, 60 kilograms of PET bottles, and 36 kilograms of aluminum cans. Deo noted that the significant amount collected indicates an increase in waste disposal compared to previous cleanup efforts, pointing to a concerning lack of accountability among residents and visitors.

“This initiative isn’t solely about cleaning up; it involves changing mindsets. We urge everyone to evaluate their habits and make deliberate choices that benefit our environment,” Deo added.

He also expressed gratitude to the Fiji Police Force for their support in ensuring safety and smooth traffic during the cleanup campaign.
