Clean Water Revolution: A New Hope for Vuaki Village

Habitat for Humanity Fiji, in partnership with the Government of Japan, celebrated the completion and official handover of a newly installed water supply system and upgraded sanitation facilities for Vuaki Village and Somolevu Catholic School. This initiative was funded through Japan’s Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP), amounting to FJ$242,732 (around US$122,221).

The project aims to tackle significant challenges faced by the community and the school, such as insufficient water supply, declining water quality, and inadequate sanitation facilities. The newly implemented water system provides a reliable source of clean water for both Vuaki Village and Somolevu Catholic School, greatly enhancing sanitation and hygiene, and promoting better health outcomes.

Tanieal Qorowale from Vuaki Village noted, “The struggles we share concerning access to clean drinking water have persisted for generations. Previously, we relied on shore springs and faced challenges during low tide to gather water, which often had a salty taste. However, with this project, we can now access water directly from communal taps, thanks to the Embassy of Japan and Habitat for Humanity Fiji.”

Japan’s Ambassador to Fiji, Rokuichiro Michi, expressed satisfaction in handing over the new water supply system and sanitation facilities, stating, “This infrastructure project lays the groundwork for a more secure life and a brighter future. We are pleased that children will have access to clean water for handwashing and can learn in a safe environment. The Embassy of Japan is dedicated to supporting Fiji’s development, particularly in strengthening its water sector.”

Susan Naidu, National Director of Habitat for Humanity, highlighted the importance of the project, saying, “We are privileged to partner with the Government of Japan on this essential initiative. Access to clean water and improved sanitation is crucial for public health and vital for inclusive community development. This project will significantly impact the village and school, enhancing quality of life and promoting well-being.”

The Government of Japan, through its GGP Programme, has been a long-time ally in empowering communities across Fiji, focusing on projects that enhance education, water supply, health, and other critical sectors. Since its inception in 1990, the GGP Programme has supported 423 projects in Fiji, with investments totaling over USD 32 million.
