Residents of Vusama and Navisabasaba in Nadroga can finally breathe a sigh of relief as they celebrate the completion of a crucial water project implemented by the Water Authority of Fiji, amounting to $3.4 million. Minister for Public Works, Ro Filipe Tuisawau, announced that this project signifies the coalition government’s commitment to providing clean and safe water to rural communities.
Historically, both villages struggled with contaminated water from wells and boreholes, resulting in numerous health issues, including waterborne diseases that plagued the community for over two decades. The villagers’ reliance on unsafe water sources hindered not only their health but also their livelihoods, as inadequate access to clean water posed challenges to everyday life.
The recently completed initiative, which involved installing pipes to connect the two villages to the main water supply, corresponds with the visions set out in the Water Sector 2050 Strategy. Tuisawau emphasized that the newly improved water system is essential not only for immediate health benefits but for the long-term sustainability of the community’s water needs.
As village chairman Asivurusi Naivalulevu remarked, this project represents a “long-awaited dream,” marking a turning point for residents who have faced years of hardship due to unreliable water services. The new infrastructure will not only facilitate better health and hygiene outcomes but also foster improved local productivity and resilience in the face of future challenges.
Similar efforts have been observed across Fiji, highlighting the ongoing commitment from the government to enhance water accessibility. For instance, communities like Matakitu Estate have experienced transformative improvements in their water supply through official government initiatives. These developments collectively showcase a national effort to prioritize access to clean water, ensuring that no community is left behind.
The future looks promising for Vusama and Navisabasaba, as these crucial improvements are expected to elevate the quality of life for residents, reduce health risks, and empower them to thrive.
