A total of 596 kilograms of general waste and recyclables were gathered during a clean-up event along Koronivia Road in Nausori last Friday. The initiative was organized by the Pacific Recycling Foundation (PRF) in collaboration with Waste Recyclers Fiji Ltd (WRFL), Malhana Cloud Kitchen, the Koronivia Business Council (KBC), and local residents. The clean-up started at the Koronivia roundabout and continued to the Shiv Krish Temple on Kabutri Drive.
Amitesh Deo, founder of PRF, stressed the significance of shared responsibility in waste management. He noted, “The amount of waste collected in just two hours underscores the pressing need for everyone to abandon the throwaway culture and take ownership of their waste. We must dedicate ourselves to maintaining a clean and green Koronivia for future generations.”
The clean-up revealed a considerable amount of household waste and recyclables, including baby diapers, PET bottles, construction debris, beer bottles and cans, takeaway food containers, clothing, razors, and various unused items. These materials were found blocking drains after recent grass-cutting efforts by the Fiji Roads Authority along the roadside.
Deo expressed disappointment that some waste remained behind because the team could not access the saturated drains, which posed risks from potentially hazardous objects that could cause injury during the clean-up. He emphasized, “This effort transcends mere waste collection; it concerns altering mindsets. We urge every individual to evaluate their behaviors and make conscious choices that benefit our environment.”
PRF also expressed its appreciation to the Fiji Police Force for their support in ensuring safety and facilitating smooth traffic flow during the initiative.
