A cleanup campaign along Koronivia Road in Nausori resulted in the collection of 596 kilograms of general waste and recyclables. This initiative, conducted by the Pacific Recycling Foundation (PRF) in collaboration with Waste Recyclers Fiji Limited (WRFL), Malhana Cloud Kitchen, the Koronivia Business Council (KBC), and local residents, took place on a Friday.
The area has been facing significant issues with illegal dumping of waste along the roadside and into drains, posing threats to both the environment and public health.
Starting at the Koronivia Roundabout and extending to the Shiv Krish Temple on Kabutri Drive, the cleanup highlighted the pressing need for improved waste management practices. PRF founder Amitesh Deo stressed the importance of shared responsibility in tackling waste issues.
“The waste collected in just two hours underscores the critical necessity for a shift away from a throwaway culture. We must all commit to keeping Koronivia clean and green for future generations,” said Deo.
During the cleanup, a considerable amount of household waste and recyclables was uncovered, including baby diapers, PET bottles, construction debris, beer bottles, cans, takeout food containers, clothing, razors, and cartons filled with discarded items, which were obstructing drains after recent grass-cutting efforts by the Fiji Roads Authority.
Deo noted the unfortunate situation where some waste was left behind due to accessibility issues in soggy drains which contained potentially dangerous objects.
In total, the campaign gathered 596 kilograms of unsorted waste, with 500 kilograms being general waste, 60 kilograms of PET bottles, and 36 kilograms of aluminum cans. This significant volume points to an increase in waste disposal in the area compared to prior cleanup efforts, revealing a concerning lack of accountability among both travelers and residents.
“This initiative is not just about cleaning; it’s about changing mindsets. We urge everyone to consider their habits and make conscious choices that benefit our environment,” said Deo.
PRF also expressed gratitude to the Fiji Police Force for their support in maintaining safety and ensuring smooth traffic flow during the campaign.
