A conflict has ignited between Opposition MP Ketan Lal and Minister for Sugar Charan Jeath Singh regarding their involvement in COP29, recently held in Baku, Azerbaijan. Both representatives were part of the Fijian delegation at the summit, which wrapped up yesterday.
The exchange escalated when Mr. Singh took to Facebook, criticizing the majority of attendees for being unproductive and suggesting that future delegations should consist of a smaller, more qualified team to effectively convey their message at COP30 next year.
In response, Mr. Lal accused Mr. Singh of hypocrisy and questioned his competence, especially given his last-minute addition to the delegation, high travel costs, and minimal contributions during the summit. He claimed that Mr. Singh’s business class travel and layovers in Sydney and Dubai were an unnecessary expense borne by taxpayers.
Mr. Lal expressed disappointment over Mr. Singh’s criticism of the negotiators, asserting that, despite the minister’s late arrival, he failed to enhance Fiji’s representation. Additionally, he suggested that Mr. Singh’s speeches were authored by dedicated staff who were actively working on Fiji’s negotiations, asserting that Mr. Singh was largely absent during key discussions.
Mr. Singh defended himself vehemently, questioning Mr. Lal’s qualifications to represent Fiji in international negotiations and challenging him to reimburse the government for his travel expenses if he genuinely believed in accountability. He boasted of his independent rise to political office, contrasting it with Mr. Lal’s less successful history, and dismissed Mr. Lal as a subordinate of another political faction.
Mr. Singh further criticized Mr. Lal for not taking an active role during the conference and remarked on his past disrespect toward the Prime Minister in Parliament, predicting a bleak outcome for Mr. Lal in the upcoming General Election.
In this political showdown, both sides have shown a willingness to contest each other’s credibility, sparking a discussion on the effectiveness of Fiji’s representation in international forums. Moving forward, this exchange serves as a reminder of the importance of transparency and accountability in politics, especially regarding the use of public funds for international engagements.
Overall, the heated debate highlights the critical need for effective leadership and clear communication within government, positioning Fiji’s political landscape for potential change as citizens seek representatives who can deliver tangible results on the global stage.
