Letirina Lutu’s long-held dream of an official marriage was realized this week during a civil ceremony facilitated by the Justice Ministry.
Ms. Lutu, hailing from Vanuabalavu, wed her longtime partner, Joseva Tuitubou, in a modest event held at Nasau Hall, attended by local villagers and a government delegation visiting Koro Island as part of the Justice Ministry’s outreach program.
Joseva was present in the village hall when ministry officials announced the availability of their services to the community. Ms. Lutu recalls initially thinking he was joking, but soon recognized he was serious, leading her to happily agree to the marriage.
The couple is raising two children together. Mr. Tuitubou expressed his appreciation for the opportunity provided by the ministry, noting that they had initially planned to hold a civil ceremony in December after saving for the trip to the mainland (Viti Levu).
“One of the challenges we face is the cost of over $200 for boat fares, plus expenses for lodging at a relative’s place before returning to Koro. All of this could accumulate to more than $1,000 for a one-week stay on the mainland,” he shared.
The civil union was officiated by Deputy Registrar General Viliame Kubunaceva, who mentioned that the ministry is making efforts to bring Births, Deaths, and Marriages services to the maritime regions and highlands of Fiji, starting this week.
