Civic Pride Promoted Amid Ratu Sukuna Park Repairs

Ratu Sukuna Park is still in the process of undergoing minor repairs and is not yet fully under the jurisdiction of the Suva City Council (SCC), according to Chairman Tevita Boseiwaqa. His clarifications followed concerns regarding littering issues at the park, which reopened last year after significant renovations.

Boseiwaqa emphasized the necessity of civic pride among the public, urging citizens to take responsibility for maintaining the cleanliness and beauty of the park. He stated, “The public should really have to learn the importance of civic pride and change their mentality and attitude.”

Currently, the responsibility for the park rests with Menon Construction Ltd, the company handling its refurbishment, which has yet to deliver the park to the SCC due to incomplete minor works, most notably the installation of lights on trees within the park’s boundaries. “Once they complete that, they will fully hand over the park,” he clarified, adding that the SCC is monitoring the associated costs of these variation tasks.

The council had anticipated these delays, attributing them to lighting order issues. Despite this, they remain committed to following up on the situation and addressing littering concerns once the park is officially handed over.

Previously, Deputy Prime Minister Manoa Kamikamica highlighted the significance of community responsibility in maintaining the park, which represents an essential investment of $7 million. He stressed the park’s role as a peaceful haven amidst the urban landscape, vital for the health and well-being of the community.

The continued focus on civic engagement and pride can lead to a brighter future for Ratu Sukuna Park, transforming it into not just a recreational area but a cherished asset for generations to come. With collective efforts and heightened awareness, Suva can thrive as a city where nature and community intertwine, enhancing the quality of life for all its residents.
