Elders from the island of Cikobia have warned that two villages could soon be without water if the water cartage service does not arrive this week. The situation is dire as the primary water source for the communities of Nautovatu and Nalele is reaching critical levels.
Jo Wasasala, a local leader, reported that the water levels have dropped significantly, prompting the need for government intervention. He stated that discussions were held with the divisional officer to communicate the urgent need for water at the nursing station on Cikobia.
If the water situation deteriorates further, Wasasala mentioned that the younger residents of the two villages might need to be relocated to areas where water supplies are more stable. Priority would be given to the elderly, women, and disabled individuals during any potential relocation efforts.
Wasasala emphasized the importance of both immediate relief efforts and long-term solutions to guarantee a reliable water supply in the future, noting that this issue has persisted for some time.
Sakiasi Ditoka, the Minister for Rural, Maritime Development, and Disaster Management, confirmed that the government is aware of the water challenges facing Cikobia and is dedicated to working around the clock to alleviate the problem.
