Church Shifts from Kava Barrels: New Fundraising Strategies Unveiled

The Methodist Church of Fiji and Rotuma conference has opted not to hold kava barrels as a fundraising method. This decision was confirmed by Manasa Vatanitawake, the secretary of the communication department, who noted that questions about the fundraiser’s nature arose during the weeklong conference.

Vatanitawake stated, “It was raised in the meeting whether we should be using kava barrels for church fundraising.” He emphasized that the conference concluded this was not an appropriate way to raise funds.

Instead, alternative fundraising activities were suggested, such as choir competitions, Sunday soli, and organizing bazaars on Saturdays. Mr. Vatanitawake also mentioned that this decision aligns with the Rev. Dr. Semisi Turagavou’s appeal for ministers to restrict kava consumption and cigarette use.

He explained that both the general secretary and the president have been advocating against excessive kava drinking and smoking, hoping to encourage healthier practices within the congregation. The elders of the church expressed concerns that kava fundraising promotes excessive drinking and late-night activities, which they believe is not a healthy approach for fundraising efforts.
