Church Leaders Call for Unity in Tackling Fiji’s Social Challenges

Reverend Dr. Semisi Turagavou, President of the Methodist Church of Fiji and Rotuma, has voiced the church’s desire to actively participate in addressing the escalating social issues facing the nation. During a conference, Dr. Turagavou emphasized the importance of the church’s involvement in significant discussions regarding drug-related problems, HIV/AIDS, and other social challenges.

He stated, “To confront these issues head-on, the MCIF seeks to be part of the key conversations.” Dr. Turagavou highlighted the need for the church to engage in village, district, and provincial meetings to ensure their perspectives are heard on these pressing matters.

Reflecting on historical precedents, he noted, “We used to have a representative in Parliament, like Reverend Tomasi Kanailagi, and we hope to see such representation again.” He underscored that the church’s active involvement in these discussions could offer essential spiritual support and guidance to the community.

Dr. Turagavou advocated for a collaborative approach, calling for unity among the church, local communities (vanua), and the government. He warned that without cooperation, the well-being of the people would be compromised and stressed the need to establish effective plans.

As the largest denomination in the region, covering both urban and rural areas, the church is positioned to lead by example for other faiths. Dr. Turagavou pointed out, “We have ministers and leaders in rural and maritime regions that can fill the gaps left by other denominations. We will commit to utilizing our ministers for this purpose.”
