Church Calls for Action as Street Dwellers Surge in Fiji

The Catholic Church in Fiji has expressed concern over the rising number of street dwellers in Suva, particularly highlighting that many of these individuals are iTaukei. As part of its outreach efforts, the church provides food packs to those living on the streets.

Ben Salacakau, a representative of the church, noted the significant health challenges associated with the increasing population of street dwellers. He emphasized the necessity for a tailored plan to tackle this pressing issue. Salacakau pointed out that the growing number of iTaukei street dwellers requires a collective response from families and communities to effectively address the situation.

The issue of street dwellers has been a major concern for local communities, including religious organizations. Mr. Salacakau mentioned that churches feel a moral obligation to offer support to those in need, providing not only immediate relief through food and shelter but also long-term assistance such as counseling and job training.

“We have established a food and nutrition program with regular distributions and soup kitchens to ensure that street dwellers have access to healthy meals,” he explained. Furthermore, he highlighted the importance of providing counseling services to address mental health issues and substance abuse, which often contribute to homelessness.

Street dwellers are particularly vulnerable to violence and exploitation, making it imperative to prioritize their safety and security through comprehensive support. Mr. Salacakau also pointed out the inadequate infrastructure for shelters and services aimed at helping these individuals.

He noted that social stigma and discrimination complicate the challenges faced by street dwellers, making it harder for them to access necessary services or reintegrate into society. This stigma can deter the broader community from supporting initiatives designed to help.

Additionally, Salacakau called attention to the lack of coordination among various organizations, including government agencies, NGOs, and religious groups, which can result in fragmented services and inefficiencies.

He is advocating for increased awareness and advocacy regarding the challenges faced by street dwellers, emphasizing the need for improved policies and support systems both at the local and national levels.
