Choosing the Right Path: A Call to Fiji’s Youth

In a compelling speech at the MGM High School Prefects Induction and Awards Ceremony in Suva, Commissioner of Police Rusiate Tudravu urged students to consider their future choices carefully. The event, hosted at Kshatriya Hall, allowed the Commissioner to address the concerning trend of youth involvement in crime, such as drug abuse, sexual offenses, and robbery, issues that have notably increased over the past decade.

Commissioner Tudravu emphasized that poor decision-making leads many young people astray, highlighting the necessity for students to choose paths that promote health and well-being. “Choose life in its beautiful form, not one darkened by addiction,” he warned, stressing that the allure of drugs poses risks not just to their health but also jeopardizes their futures.

Tudravu’s message also extended to parents and guardians, encouraging them to reflect on their roles in guiding their children’s choices. He pointed out that it is easy to blame the education system or authorities when problems arise; however, he insisted that accountability begins at home. “Humility in accepting responsibility will positively influence your children,” he added.

The ceremony also celebrated the achievements of newly appointed prefects and award recipients for the 2024 school year, including Wame Vosayaco as Head Boy and Siya Maharaj as Head Girl.

This year’s address underscores a recurring theme in Commissioner Tudravu’s recent public engagements, emphasizing the urgency of reform in Fiji’s educational system to prepare youth adequately for the challenges they face, particularly regarding social issues like drug abuse. His call for community involvement and supportive educational frameworks resonates with previous statements from other educational leaders, focusing on the potential of collaborative efforts to create a safer and more productive environment for Fiji’s young people.

By fostering greater parental involvement and community support in education, there is hope for nurturing a generation that not only comprehends their responsibilities but also contributes positively to society. As Commissioner Tudravu and other leaders advocate for reform, the commitment to enhance educational practices presents a ray of hope for a brighter future for Fiji’s youth.
