A shipment of emergency relief supplies from the Chinese government has arrived in Vanuatu’s capital, Port Vila, bringing much-needed aid following a devastating earthquake. The 35-tonne package includes essential items such as tents, folding beds, solar lights, food, water purification equipment, and medical supplies.
This assistance comes in the wake of a 7.3-magnitude earthquake that struck Port Vila on December 17, resulting in at least 14 fatalities, over 200 injuries, and significant damage to the city’s infrastructure.
During the handover ceremony, Chinese Ambassador to Vanuatu Li Minggang expressed China’s commitment to aiding Vanuatu in its recovery efforts and highlighted the extensive damage caused by the earthquake. He assured that China stands in solidarity with Vanuatu at this critical time.
Vanuatu’s caretaker Prime Minister Charlot Salwai thanked China for its swift response and underscored the importance of international support for the nation’s recovery process.
The arrival of this aid package not only provides immediate relief to those affected but also signifies the strong partnership between China and Vanuatu. This collaborative effort showcases how nations can come together in times of crisis, providing a glimmer of hope for the affected communities as they begin the journey of rebuilding and recovery.
