Ratu Viliame Seruvakula, chairman of the Great Council of Chiefs (GCC), has clarified that a recent visit to China by some council members aimed at obtaining technical assistance rather than financial support for income-generating projects.
Following the trip, Rewa Province was selected as the pilot area to implement some of the effective practices gathered during the visit. Ratu Viliame stated that this initiative would be executed in partnership with Roko Tui Dreketi, Ro Teimumu Kepa.
He emphasized the importance of comprehending the project fully and noted that if the plan proves successful in Rewa, it could be replicated in other provinces. Ratu Viliame highlighted China’s effective methods for poverty alleviation and acknowledged their innovative ideas. However, he pointed out the necessity of adapting these strategies to Fiji’s unique governmental structure and societal context.
He recognized that many Fijians have historically relied on subsistence practices in farming and fishing, a habit passed down through generations. He believes that there is a need for training to encourage a shift toward more commercial practices.
Ratu Viliame made it clear that the delegation sought technical expertise, stating, “The trip to China was not to ask for money or for people to come in and do the job; we need the expertise to utilize our own resources.”
