The relationship between China and Fiji has been reaffirmed as one of friendship, according to Shaheen Ali, the Permanent Secretary for Trade. In a media conference earlier this week, Ali addressed concerns surrounding Chinese influence and geopolitical tensions between Eastern and Western nations. He confidently stated, “I can definitely confirm that China is a friend and not a threat at all.”

Ali emphasized the mutual goal shared by both Fiji and Chinese authorities: to enhance trade and investment opportunities while minimizing disruptions. He recounted his recent visit to China, describing it as an experience filled with warmth and hospitality, further indicating that there are strong business opportunities ahead.

Supporting this perspective, Liu Ke, the Economic and Commercial Counsellor at the Chinese Embassy, echoed Ali’s comments. He dismissed the notion that China poses a threat to Fiji or the broader region. Liu encouraged Fijians to visit China to experience its culture and hospitality firsthand, urging them to rely on personal experiences rather than assumptions based on media portrayals. “Stop basing your assumptions on the news or what you have heard. Travel and find out for yourselves,” he advised.

He concluded by stating that relations between Fiji and China will continue as usual, highlighting a positive outlook for future cooperation.

In summary, both Fijian and Chinese officials are optimistic about their partnership, viewing it as an opportunity for growth rather than a cause for concern. This perspective emphasizes the importance of personal experience over preconceived notions, presenting a hopeful narrative for ongoing collaboration and cultural exchange between the two nations.
