China and Fiji Strengthen Ties: What’s Next for the Pacific Partnership?

China considers Fiji a key partner in the South Pacific region, as noted by Chinese Premier Li Qiang during his meeting with Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka in Beijing. Mr. Li emphasized that Fiji was the first Pacific Island nation to establish diplomatic relations with China. Mr. Rabuka expressed Fiji’s view of China as a dependable partner, affirming adherence to the one-China principle and support for initiatives such as the Belt and Road Initiative.

Mr. Rabuka conveyed Fiji’s interest in enhancing cooperation with China across various sectors, including economy and trade, infrastructure, agriculture, fisheries, tourism, and connectivity, aiming to unlock new avenues for bilateral collaboration.

Mr. Li affirmed China’s commitment to support the Fijian people’s chosen development path and expressed readiness to collaborate with Fiji in fulfilling the mutual agreements established between the two nations. He assured that China will maintain its friendship with Fiji, characterized by trust and mutual support, and aims to advance their comprehensive strategic partnership for the benefit of both peoples.

He encouraged both nations to maximize their complementary strengths, focusing on deeper cooperation in infrastructure, agriculture, fisheries, light industry, education, tourism, and poverty alleviation within the Belt and Road framework. Mr. Li asserted that China would increase imports from Fiji and encourage Chinese investments in the island nation.

Additionally, Mr. Li stated that China supports Pacific Island countries in implementing the 2050 Strategy for the Blue Pacific Continent and will collaborate closely with Fiji and other island nations to promote initiatives related to global development, security, and civilization, with the objective of fostering a fair and balanced multipolar world alongside inclusive economic growth.
