China has identified Fiji as a key partner in the South Pacific region, as emphasized by Chinese Premier Li Qiang during his recent meeting with Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka in Beijing. Mr. Li noted that Fiji was the first Pacific Island nation to establish diplomatic relations with China.
Mr. Rabuka affirmed Fiji’s position as a reliable partner that adheres to the one-China principle and supports the Belt and Road Initiative. He expressed Fiji’s eagerness to enhance cooperation with China across various sectors, including economy and trade, infrastructure, agriculture, fisheries, tourism, and connectivity, with the aim of expanding opportunities for bilateral collaboration.
Premier Li assured that China will continue to support the Fijian people’s chosen development path and is prepared to collaborate with Fiji to fulfill the mutual understandings established between their leaders. He stated, “China will continue to be true friends with Fiji, friends who trust and support each other,” and emphasized the importance of strengthening exchanges at all levels to foster a robust and steady development of their comprehensive strategic partnership.
Furthermore, he highlighted the need for both countries to leverage their respective strengths and deepen cooperation in areas like infrastructure, agriculture, fisheries, light industry, education, tourism, and poverty alleviation within the high-quality framework of Belt and Road initiatives.
Mr. Li added that China aims to increase imports from Fiji and encourage Chinese investments in the island nation. He reiterated China’s support for Pacific Island countries in implementing the 2050 Strategy for the Blue Pacific Continent and mentioned collaboration efforts with Fiji and other nations to promote the Global Development Initiative, Global Security Initiative, and Global Civilization Initiative. The overarching goal is to foster a fair, balanced multipolar world and drive inclusive global economic growth.
