Children who have contracted HIV/AIDS through sharing blood are receiving rehabilitation at Lautoka Hospital. Lynda Tabuya, the Women, Children and Social Protection Minister, confirmed that families of these affected children have sought assistance.
“I have been informed about several children in Lautoka Hospital who engaged in risky behaviors, leading to HIV/AIDS infections,” said Ms. Tabuya. “They are currently undergoing rehabilitation at the hospital.”
She emphasized the importance of maintaining confidentiality regarding the children’s identities, as required by law, while noting that their families are deeply concerned.
Ms. Tabuya expressed regret that the situation had escalated to this point. She urged the community to take responsibility for the well-being of children.
“We need families and communities to step up and care for our children. It’s vital to have a prevention plan and strategy in place. We call upon our community leaders and traditional authorities to take on this responsibility for the welfare of our people,” she stated.
She also highlighted the role of faith-based leaders, urging them to advocate for preventive measures from their congregations as a significant influence among youth and children.
