Concerns over child safety have escalated following a recent incident in which a toddler was found wandering alone on Laucala Beach Road in Nasinu. Acting Police Commissioner Juki Fong Chew emphasized the necessity of prioritizing children’s welfare to prevent potential tragedies.

This situation unfolded when two women discovered the toddler and brought him to a nearby police station. Following this, the police appealed to the public through social media to help identify the child’s parents or guardians, resulting in a quick reunion when the post gained traction.

Commissioner Chew highlighted that the authorities will thoroughly investigate child neglect cases, which could lead to legal action against negligent parents or guardians. He expressed concern that this isn’t an isolated incident, referencing numerous similar cases where lack of supervision has resulted in severe outcomes, including drownings and other accidents.

He urged parents and guardians to maintain vigilance, noting how quickly accidents can happen due to children’s natural curiosity.

Meanwhile, Assistant Minister for Children Sashi Kiran echoed these sentiments, calling on all caregivers to ensure they are aware of their children’s whereabouts. Her comments come in light of a tragic incident last week in which a one-year-old boy was killed after being struck by a vehicle, reportedly after leaving his home unnoticed.

Kiran stressed the importance of child protection, advocating for keen awareness and support systems for parents to prevent neglect and ensure children’s safety.
