Child Neglect in Focus: Are We Doing Enough to Protect Our Kids?

Concerns are rising over child safety after a recent incident in Nasinu where a toddler was discovered wandering alone on Laucala Beach Road. Acting Commissioner of Police Juki Fong Chew emphasized the urgent need to prioritize children’s welfare to prevent tragedies. The police were alerted when two women found the child and took him to a nearby police station. Following a social media appeal, the toddler was successfully reunited with his family.

ACP Chew stated that the police will thoroughly investigate instances of child neglect, highlighting that negligence could lead to legal consequences for parents and guardians. He noted that this is not an isolated incident and that there have been similar cases in the past resulting in tragic outcomes, such as drownings or vehicular accidents, that stemmed from a lack of supervision.

He urged parents and guardians to remain vigilant as children can quickly get into dangerous situations.

In light of these developments, Assistant Minister for Children Sashi Kiran also called on caregivers to be mindful of children’s whereabouts. She referenced a tragic incident last week in Navua where a one-year-old boy lost his life after reportedly being struck by a vehicle. Kiran acknowledged the challenges that parents face, especially in urban areas, but stressed the importance of seeking support to prevent neglect and ensure child safety.
