Child Neglect: A Rising Danger That Demands Attention

Concerns surrounding children’s safety have been raised after a recent incident involving a lost toddler. Acting Commissioner of Police Juki Fong Chew responded to reports that the young child was found wandering alone on Laucala Beach Road in Nasinu and taken to a nearby police station by two women.

In a statement, ACP Chew emphasized the importance of prioritizing children’s welfare to prevent future tragedies. He indicated that the police would thoroughly investigate all incidents of child neglect. Following a post made on the police’s official Facebook page seeking assistance in identifying the toddler’s parents or guardians, the child was successfully reunited with his family after the plea gained widespread attention.

ACP Chew noted the potential legal consequences for parents and guardians found negligent, highlighting that previous cases have resulted in charges due to similar situations. He expressed alarm over the frequency of such cases, pointing to past incidents where children suffered severe injuries or fatal accidents because of inadequate supervision.

“Children are naturally curious, and it only takes a brief moment for a tragedy to unfold,” he cautioned, urging parents and guardians to remain vigilant.

In related comments, Assistant Minister for Children Sashi Kiran echoed the call for heightened awareness regarding child welfare. She highlighted the tragic case of a one-year-old boy who died in Navua after being struck by a vehicle, emphasizing the critical need for parents to be aware of their children’s whereabouts at all times.

Kiran acknowledged the challenges faced by parents, particularly in urban areas, but stressed the necessity of finding proper support to avoid neglect and ensure children’s safety. She warned that the consequences of inattention can be devastating, with even one lost life being too many.
