Child Neglect: A Call to Action for Parents and Guardians

Concerns over child safety have been raised following an incident where a toddler was found wandering alone along Laucala Beach Road in Nasinu. The child was discovered by two women who brought him to a nearby police station. Acting Commissioner of Police Juki Fong Chew emphasized the importance of prioritizing children’s welfare, warning that neglect could lead to tragic outcomes.

In light of the situation, police have urged the public to help identify the child’s parents or guardians. After a post about the incident went viral, the toddler has since been reunited with his family. Commissioner Chew indicated that the police are committed to investigating such cases thoroughly and will consider negligence for legal action against parents or guardians when appropriate.

“This is not the first occurrence of this nature,” noted ACP Chew. “It is troubling, and whenever we deal with cases involving children, we examine the element of negligence. In the past, parents and guardians have faced charges related to similar incidents.”

He shared previous cases where children suffered severe harm due to a lack of supervision, including drownings and accidents. Chew urged caregivers to remain vigilant, stating that children are inquisitive and can quickly find themselves in dangerous situations if not properly supervised.

In a related appeal, Assistant Minister for Children Sashi Kiran urged parents and guardians to be aware of their children’s whereabouts and prioritize their safety. She highlighted the tragic incident last Monday when a one-year-old boy died in Naitonitoni, Navua, after being struck by a vehicle. The child had reportedly wandered out of his home unnoticed.

Kiran acknowledged the challenges faced by parents, especially in urban areas, but stressed the need for adequate care and supervision to prevent neglect. She emphasized the serious nature of child protection and the significant consequences of inattention.
