Child Carriers: The Shocking New Trend in Drug Trafficking

The alarming trend of parents using their young children as carriers for illicit drugs has prompted increased attention from police, particularly in rural areas, according to Reverend Jone Saraqia, Superintendent of the Veilomani Boys Home. He reported that some parents are now strapping drugs like marijuana into their children’s diapers to evade detection at police checkpoints. This practice has been suspected since it first came to light in 2011, and it has only intensified over the years.

Reverend Saraqia pointed out that parents resort to these tactics as a means of transporting drugs more easily, especially when they are traveling with their children for agricultural marketing days. He explained that while previously, farmers concealed drugs in their produce, some have turned to using their children as decoys to bypass authorities more effectively.

The Reverend underscored that police have started to react by searching toddlers, recognizing them as potential carriers in this illicit trade. He highlighted a significant network that has evolved since the initial discoveries, suggesting that the techniques used have likely adapted and developed further.

In line with these observations, UNICEF Child Mental Security Specialist Dr. Koen Sevenants expressed concerns that this exploitation of children could extend into sexual trafficking if not addressed. He emphasized the need for ethical considerations in protecting children’s well-being and exposed the risks of such practices to innocent lives.

Commissioner of Police Rusiate Tudravu has urged the community to report any suspicious activities regarding this trend. He acknowledged that, while no formal reports have been filed, the police will investigate these claims thoroughly.

This situation reflects broader concerns about child safety amidst the rising involvement of youth in drug culture. Assistant Commissioner of Police Crime, Mesake Waqa, has previously noted the increased targeting of children by drug dealers, particularly in environments where they should feel safe.

The community’s response is crucial. Efforts toward preventive measures must engage families and organizations, fostering dialogue and raising awareness about the risks posed to children. Working together, communities can aim to shield their youth from the perils of drug exploitation and build a more secure future for all children.
